Introduction
The information on this page only pertains to students in the Health Research Program (HRP). All other clinical/practicum students must follow the instructions on our main Varicella page. Remember that you can also find step-by-step Varicella information in your program's comprehensive PDF compliance guide, available on your dedicated resource page! Varicella is also known as Chicken Pox. You were likely immunized for Varicella in childhood, and your past vaccine records are one option you can use to achieve compliance. The second option is to demonstrate immunity to Varicella through a positive titer (blood test that measure immunity). If your titer is negative or equivocal, you'll have additional follow-up steps to complete. As long as you complete each follow-up step on schedule and submit your completed steps to Complio, you will be temporarily compliant while you complete your follow-up steps.

Complete Required Steps
You have two options to fulfill the Varicella requirement: documenting two past Varicella vaccine doses or documenting immunity to Varicella through a positive titer (blood test that measures immunity). Complete these steps:
- If you are using the past vaccine record option:
- Obtain documentation of two past Varicella vaccine doses
- If you are using the titer option:
- Have your healthcare provider order a titer for Varicella
- Complete bloodwork at provider’s designated lab location
- If your titer is positive, you’ll have no follow-up steps to complete. Proceed to the documentation process.
- If your titer is negative or equivocal, you’ll have additional follow-up steps:
- Receive at least one Varicella booster (dose of Varicella vaccine)
- Have your healthcare provider order a repeat Varicella titer
- Complete repeat titer 6-8 weeks after your booster
- If repeat titer is negative or equivocal, you’ll be considered a non-responder. Complete the Non-Responder Form with your provider.
Document Completed Steps
Review documentation resources for a reminder of what is required on your documentation. How to document completion of required steps:
- If you are using the past vaccine record option:
- Obtain documentation of your two past MMR vaccine doses
- If you are using the titer option:
- After you’ve completed your bloodwork, obtain a lab report for your titer
- If you need to receive a booster, obtain documentation of the booster
- If you need to complete a repeat titer, obtain documentation of the titer results
- If you need to complete the Non-Responder Form, complete the form with your provider
Submit Documentation to Complio
Review step-by-step submission instructions for a reminder of how to submit your documents.
The key is to submit each component to its corresponding requirement in the Varicella category:
- If you are using the past vaccine documentation option:
- Submit your first Varicella vaccine to the Initial Varicella Dose 1 requirement
- Submit your second Varicella vaccine to the Initial Varicella Dose 2 requirement
- If you are using the titer option:
- Submit Varicella titer to Varicella Primary Titer requirement regardless of result
- If you must complete follow-up steps, submit each completed step to its individual requirement:
- Varicella booster to Varicella Adult Booster 1 requirement
- Repeat titer to the Varicella Repeat Titer requirement
- Non-responder form to the Varicella Non-Responder Form requirement
